At one time the masonic ring was worn with simply the shank facing out, thereby concealing the secretive symbols and emblems, and reducing the possibility of persecution. Variations of these rings include the swivelling head which revolves to hide the masonic symbols, and the fixed head model. The fixed head model of course does not rotate – the masonic detail is always visible. However, with a two-sided or “pivot” head, the top revolves to be replaced by a plain gold disc which can be engraved if needed.
